Mariama Ba was born in 1982 in Dakar, Senegal. Her first work of fiction, Le cœur des ténèbres (The Heart of Darkness), was published in 2008. She has published three other books, Épuisé (2010) and Les Jardins de la mort (2011) and L'île des ombres (2013). She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Prix des cinq continents (2010), the Prix du roman noir (2011), the Prix Femina Maghreb Arabe (2012) and the Prix Fénéon (2014).
